Create a Budget

Your budget is a list of spending categories, each with a monthly amount. Every transaction is sorted into one of them, and the dashboards measure what you spend against what you planned. You have one active budget at a time, and you can change it whenever you like.

  1. 1

    Open the budget editor

Go to Budgets and click Create New Budget, or use the Create your budget step on Home.

  2. 2

Name it and pick a start date

A name and a start date are all you need. Leave the End Date empty for a budget that keeps going month after month.

  3. 3

    Add your spending categories

Under Spending Categories, add one row per category (Rent, Groceries, Dining out) and give each a monthly amount. The Monthly total shows what you plan to spend each month. Use Add Category for more rows.

  4. 4

    Choose colors

Tap a category's color swatch to pick how it's shown on your budget and dashboards. New categories start with the next unused color.

  5. 5

Add subcategories, if you want more detail

Open a category's subcategories to split it up, like Household into Utilities and Supplies. Subcategories don't get their own amount; what you spend in them counts toward the category.

  6. 6

    Mark recurring bills

Tap the repeat icon on a category like Subscriptions to mark everything in it as recurring, or mark just some of its subcategories. Every charge in a recurring category is tracked against a recurring rule, which is how bills still to come show up on your budget bars. When you save, charges already in those categories are linked to the rules they fit, and you're shown a pre-filled rule for each bill that doesn't have one. Recurring categories show the repeat icon on the Budgets page. See Recurring Bills and Rules.

  7. 7

    Save it

Click Create Budget. You'll land on the Budgets page, where each category shows how much of its monthly amount you've spent so far.

Reserved categories: Income, Internal and Savings are created for you. They can't be given a monthly amount and never count against your budget, but you can add subcategories to them. What each one is for.

Changing it later: click Update Budget on the Budgets page. Renaming, recoloring or re-amounting a category keeps its transactions and rules attached.
